Another Remarkable Year at the Well Walk Theatre

Since opening, the Well Walk Theatre has gone from a bold local initiative to one of London’s most talked-about cultural success stories – proving that a small neighbourhood stage can make a national impact.

Just a year ago, the Well Walk Theatre celebrated winning The Stage Award for Best Theatre Building in the UK. Since then, the theatre has continued from strength to strength, presenting over 300 sold-out performances and receiving consistent critical acclaim, with four- and five-star reviews across the specialist press.

A particular highlight was Hopeful Monsters, named by The Stage as one of the outstanding productions of 2025, alongside major titles such as Evita and Paddington. The show has continued its winning streak by receiving the Ettie Award this week for Best Show for Young Audiences. This recognition placed the Well Walk Theatre firmly on the national stage – proof that world-class work can thrive in the most intimate of settings.

The theatre’s growing reputation was further confirmed when its founders, Dylan McNeil and Zina Drouche, were recently named among The Stage’s 100 most influential people in UK theatre – a remarkable recognition for the owners of this small, independent cultural space.

Looking ahead, the founders plan to continue deepening the theatre’s community roots through close collaborations with local schools, free after-school readings and creative workshops, while also placing a particular emphasis on the theatre’s bookshop, with the ambition of making it a destination in its own right.

This literary focus was exemplified by a live-streamed event with Michael Rosen, broadcast nationally to schools and watched live by over 300,000 children across the UK – quite possibly the largest audience ever reached by this 50-seat theatre!

Camden Council’s Culture Team is proud to have supported the Well Walk Theatre on its journey so far and is now working with partners to explore a cultural corridor that will link Hampstead’s key cultural venues, including Burgh House, Fenton House, Keats House, 2 Willow Road and the Well Walk Theatre. More to come soon!
